Nữ hoàng nhạc Pop và giấc mơ kiểu Mỹ

Người ta nói Madonna đã tự mâu thuẫn với chính mình khi viết American Life: một album sặc mùi chính trị, đả kích thế giới màu mè, phù phiếm và coi trọng vật chất. Với bìa đĩa là hình chân dung Madonna ăn mặc như một quân nhân mô phỏng bức ảnh nổi tiếng của Che Guevara , American life ở thời điểm đó đối với truyền thông Mỹ như là lời khiêu khích, thách thức bằng âm nhạc của Madonna về giấc mơ nước Mỹ dưới thời G. Bush.

Lí do ư? Bởi chính Madonna đã từng tự nhận mình là cô gái vật chất và kiêu hãnh hát rằng “I am a material girl living in a material world” năm nào, người nghe có phần sững sờ khi ca khúc đầu tiên American Life mở ra một chuỗi lặp đi lặp lại những câu hỏi của cô về cái gọi là cuộc sống trong mơ của nước Mỹ:

và rồi ở những giây phút cao trào nhất của bài hát, Madonna tự chất vấn chính mình:

It's the allure of the beautiful life: 'Look like this, you're gonna be happy. Drive this car, you're gonna be popular. Wear these clothes and people are gonna want to fuck you.' It's a very powerful illusion and people are caught up in it, including myself. Or I was."

Madonna cũng tranh thủ lồng ghép những quan điểm và tuyên ngôn mạnh mẽ của mình về chính sách bảo thủ và những tư tưởng nông cạn dưới thời Bush:

“I'd like to express my extreme point-of-view

I'm not a Christian and I'm not a Jew

I'm just living out the American dream

And I just realized that nothing is what it seems”

Và sẽ thật vô cùng sai sót nếu như nhắc đến American Life mà không nói tới video phản chiến đầy dữ dội của nó. Mang bối cảnh một buổi diễn thời trang với chủ đề quân đội, tất cả những hình ảnh khốc liệt nhất về mâu thuẫn chủng tộc, bạo lực và chiến tranh phi nghĩa hiện lên màn hình, trong lúc những người mẫu sải bước dứoi ánh đèn flash lấp lánh giữa tiếng cười đùa vô tâm của những con người ăn vận sang trọng đến dự đêm tiệc thời trang. Khi đã ở đỉnh cao và là người có tất cả, nữ hoàng vật chất là người hiểu rõ hơn ai hết giá trị của danh vọng, tiền tài và hào quang. Nếu như gạt bỏ đi hết những thứ phù phiếm bề ngoài, điều cốt lõi làm nên giá trị của mỗi con người vẫn là cảm xúc và tình yêu. Ở đoạn giữa của album, Madonna đã hát về tình yêu bằng những cảm xúc ngọt ngào nhất của một người phụ nữ đã trải qua hết những sóng gió và thăng trầm của showbiz. Bộ ba bản ballads được đặt cạnh nhau Nothing fails, Invervention và X Static process là khoảnh khắc dịu dàng và tươi sáng nhất của một album nói về những góc khuất đen tối. Madonna hát thủ thỉ và dịu dàng hơn bao hết- người ta không còn thấy hình bóng của một bà hoàng quyền lực lắm mưu nhiều kế của showbiz, mà là những lời hát đơn giản và gần gũi nhất. Chỉ khi tìm thấy hạnh phúc từ những điều chân thành nhất như tình yêu, con người ta mới hiểu hết được giá trị của chính mình- X Static Process đã chiêm nghiệm như vậy trong lời hát cuôi cùng:

“ I always wished that I could find someone as beautiful as you

But in the process I forgot that I was special too

I always wished that I could find someone as talented as you

But in the process I forgot that I was just as good as you”

American Life kết thúc với Easy Ride, một trong những ca khúc triết lí nhất mà Madonna từng viết về cuộc sống và cách mà cô đã hiên ngang trụ vững như một tượng đài sừng sững khó có thể thay thế của làng giải trí thế giới. Thành công không phải là một phép màu , và hành trang duy nhất để chinh phục nó nằm ở chính sự nỗ lực và khao khát trong mỗi con người:

“I want the good life

But I don’t want an easy ride

What I want is to work for it

Feel the blood and sweat on my fingertips

That’s what I want for me.”

Về mặt âm nhạc, American Life là sự tiếp nối của album trước đó Music, với sự pha trộn của những âm thanh điện tử, folk và guitar acoustic. Được dàn dựng dưới dạng một concept album (album theo chủ đề) bàn tay nhào nặn của producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï, American Life có sự thống nhất và xuyên suốt cả về tinh thần, giai điệu và lời ca. Nhiều người cho rằng đây chính là dự án âm nhạc tham vọng và nhiều sáng tạo nhất của Madonna trong suốt hai thập kỉ trở lại đây kể từ Ray of Light. American Life đáng tiếc là một thất bại lớn về mặt hình ảnh và doanh thu đối với Madonna ở thị trường Mỹ. Tất cả các radio trên khắp nước Mỹ đã đồng loạt tẩy chay những bài hát của Madonna vì thông điệp phản chiến mà cô theo đuổi.Tất cả những nhà phê bình tại Mỹ lúc bấy giờ đều chấm American Life điểm thấp nhất cùng những lời chỉ trích thậm tệ. Cũng không sai nếu nhận định rằng vị trí của Madonna tại Mỹ đã không bao giờ có thể trở lại được như cũ sau cú tuột dốc với American Life.

Qua thời gian, American Life dần nhận được sự ghi nhận và đánh giá công tâm hơn từ phía những người nghe nhạc. Khi cuộc bầu cử tổng thống Mỹ 2016 kết thúc với sự lên ngôi của Donald Trump, nhiều người đã tìm nghe lại American Life và dành cho album những lời tán dương. Tờ Billboard trong bài viết kỉ niệm ngày phát hành của album cho rằng American Life là một sản phẩm đi trước thời đại, và xứng đáng được đặt ngang hàng bất kì những đĩa đơn để đời khác của Madonna. Trang Pitchfork lại cho rằng American Life lẽ ra đã có thể là một cú nổ lớn của bà hoàng nhạc Pop khi vạch trần giấc mơ kiểu Mỹ nếu như không phải được phát hành vào năm 2003.

Một khoảng trầm thú vị trong sự nghiệp của Madonna và cũng là một điều thú vị của nghệ thuật. Nếu có một phép so sánh, American Life như một viên ngọc thô và sần sùi, vẻ đẹp của nó khác với những gì lộng lẫy đã làm nên tên tuổi của Madonna. The inspiration came from our experiences growing up as multiracial kids and having to deal with issues of being on the inside of a community but feeling like we are on the outside. 明けましておめでとうございます！動画をアップするのがかなり久しぶりになりました。加えて、昨夏、予期せず水泳しちゃったとき（つまり「カヌー転覆事故」）に、いつも使っていたビデオカメラが他界してしまったので、新しいカメラを購入して画質の向上を図ってみましたが、いかがでしょうか。

2019年の初動画として、あいみょん「君はロックを聴かない」を英語で歌ってみました。この歌の解釈については、ある男性の視点から描かれたストーリーで、好意を寄せている年下の女性に対し、青春の頃聴いていた音楽やレコードを紹介する形で、お互いの距離を縮めようと努力する恋愛をイメージして訳しました。Enjoy♪
