‘An English-speaking Mao Zedong’|Lee Yee
In mid-November, a friend of mine, a youngster, texted me: “He’s really stingy.” I replied: “It’s OK! Even though we have been holding different views for years, he has been putting up with my audacity.”
Since we met because of June 4 at a dinner with other pro-democracy movement figures, we have been acquainted with each other for more than 30 years, during which we had frequent dealings and contact with one another for a number of years. Asked by him about how much money was needed for running a magazine, I, the operator of The 90s, a business with small capital, told him to put in ten times of mine for a weekly publication. In the end, he invested a hundred times of it in running the most influential magazine that cornered the market in town. Later on, he founded a newspaper which also changed the media ecology in Hong Kong, initiating an unprecedented market setting all at once.
Inspired by the democracy movement in Beijing to switch to another line of work, he surely did it for his compassion for China. I used to have it myself, and it stayed strong until June 4, after which I merely hoped for the indigenous values of Hong Kong to be preserved. In light of the Handover being imperative under the circumstances, to get the democratization of Hong Kong moving seemed to be the only way out, though I reckoned the chance of success was slender as well.
In terms of our beliefs in freedom, democracy and the rule of law, there hasn’t been much difference between us. As to our outlooks on the prospect of democracy of China and Hong Kong, I have always been pessimistic while he has always taken the opposite view. It is understandable because pessimism is never an obstacle to my writing while it is to an operation of such a big media business.
In 2005, I was invited by him to become a writer-turned-editor in charge of the opinion page. He promised me back then he would never meddle in my editorial orientation. As I recommended on purpose a commentator who had fallen foul of the paper, he consented without hesitation. It’s a shame that I was finally turned down by that commentator.
From being an editor to being fired nine years later, from writing editorials to writing a column, I have been disagreeing with him on a number of issues over the last decade: localists versus pro-Greater China camp, freedom of discussion about independence, evaluation of the youths and the valiant, support for or criticisms of the pan-democratic alliance, “conspiracy theories” in all previous elections… But as my boss, he has been putting up with me, delivering to me his opposite viewpoints through somebody else. And he never hampered me from publishing articles I showed him in advance that bluntly criticized him.
With his compassion for Greater China, opening up of China was definitely appealing to him. As far as I know, China did try quite a number of times to take him in in its united front work. There was an occasion that one of his good friends met him in Taiwan, saying to him that he was invited by the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) to pay a visit to China, that he was to be allowed to run newspapers there about everything – entertainments, sports and the society, except for politics, and that in view of the growing economy of China, he would earn a big fortune. No sooner had he finished listening to it than he called the security guards to send the guest off. Later, he explained to me why he did it so abruptly instead of euphemizing. He said he was actually afraid of not being able to resist the enticement, and that he would abstain from the principle of distancing himself from the power. Listening to the story about his being aware he would get feeble, I admired him in all sincerity.
At whiles I just think he displeased the CCP not because of his words and deeds, but the fact that he couldn’t tell good from bad. Who couldn’t be bought off? Not least he’s just a businessman. That was just so riling!
When the publication began in Taiwan, I was told that according to the tacit business regulation in Taiwan, kickbacks had to be given to those who were empowered to do ad placements from the clients’ side. Yet the boss disapproved of it, which made things difficult for the staff in the advertising department. I asked him why he couldn’t bend the rule a little. He said as we kept laying bare under-the-table deals among politicians and businessmen, it was hard to justify ourselves if we also engaged in the same dirty deals. He is really somebody who insists on complying with laws, attaches importance to rules and ethics. Whenever I think of such a person being imprisoned, I feel sorrowful about him and the society.
It has been more than a year since last time I got in touch with him that he gave me a call asking me to stop writing my memoir for a few days to talk about the anti-extradition movement in my column in March last year. That was the only time he has ever suggested a writing topic for me. I agreed for I was going to do the same thing.
The youngsters in touch with me have always been discontent with him and his paper because of a lot of events over more than a decade, but I have always told them to take a look at a bigger picture. He is said to be an English-speaking Mao Zedong in the newsroom. Maybe it’s true. Mao’s merits and demerits aside, his manifest stubbornness and insane words and deeds showed he was somebody that would achieve something big. Winston Churchill was also an eccentric and moody person, but he did a marvelous feat against all odds. It seems Trump belongs to the same category, so does he.

FORTUNE OR MISFORTUNE, I DECIDE
08 Jul 2019 - 146
29 Dec 2019 - 300
03 Mar 2020 - 1000

08 Jul 2019 - 146 subs
29 Dec 2019 - 300 subs
03 Mar 2020 - 1000 subs
Today - 2000 subs
At any time of the day, there are now 42 of me talking on YouTube about what it takes to live a better Destiny.
I started weekly YouTube uploads in end June 2019. That is 2 years after my channel started.
In July 2019, I did a poll in my Stories, asking my readers if they thought I would hit 1K subs by end of the year.
Of the 7 who voted, they all think I would. Some of them even dropped me PMs of confidence.
I was late by 65 days.
But as soon as I hit 1000 subs, my channel crossed the 2K mark in a matter of few days.
Thank you to the 7 readers who saw the dark horse in me. ❤️
This uprise in my channel started on 17 Feb 2020, when a gentleman shared my old video on a Hong Kong forum, to encourage abstinence from sexual misdeeds.
It brought in a wave of viewers, 95% men.
Yeah, that same video that some dude shared on a Singapore forum in a crass way. Got about 100K views now.
YouTube recognised the upsurge and pushed my video to more of its users with its almighty algorithm.
And out of a sudden, I have an influx of male audience from mainly Taiwan, Malaysia and... China.
Eh, thought Youtube banned in China? 😏
This is good news because if you follow my stories, you will know that in end Feb, I tried starting a channel in Bilibili (China’s younger version of Youtube). I also opened a Weibo account.
But my videos didn’t pass their stringent checks and were dismissed as superstitious and feudal. #whattheduck
Turned out that Heaven had other plans for my channel.
I always prefer meeting my clients in person and initially wondered if I will have a drop in clients or cancellations of consultations with the current epidemic situation.
Didn’t happen.
I get requests for video calls and will be doing one for the first time to New Zealand.
But there’s always two sides to a coin.
The ooh-la-la side of increased popularity,
And the 🤬 side.
I was mistaken to be a Taiwanese, and got a snide remark that me using English shows a lack of confidence in my culture and me wanting to win over the Westerners.
Eh bro, no confidence in my culture, I NUS graduate what for become Feng Shui practitioner? You think fun to be laughed superstitious meh? 🤔
Also, not all who speak good Mandarin must be Taiwanese. There are Singaporeans who can also speak good Mandarin. #weareSingaporeweareSingapore
Even if I’m a Taiwanese and choose to use English in my videos, remember this: We are all inter-dependent. Chinese Metaphysics and Buddhism were never meant to serve only one breed of humans.
Our ancestors have much bigger love and foresight than that. Learn from them.
There were also lewd comments like a man who said I’m bluffing and wanted to shoot his semen on my face.
Wah, cannot debate properly, resort to using sperm army.🏆
Shoot from your country to Singapore? You sure have a powerful rocket. Come, let’s be fair. Show us photos of yourself and let everyone clap for you this champion.
👏👏👏
I told my Shifu about this. His wise words: tell him to save it for his offspring.
Jokes aside...
I just want you to know whatever we face in the past always help us to handle our future challenges better.
I received very bad beatings and scoldings from my mum as a kid, because of her foul temper. I endured for 26 years before I married.
When I was in SQ, as a junior, I was constantly being picked at (aka bullied) for 2 years by a senior colleague. I never once complained to my supervisor.
But things got so obvious and serious, that our team inflight supervisor held a team meeting during our Los Angeles stay over, to ask the colleague what was wrong with her.
When the husband asked if I was okay with the sudden naysayers, I replied that this was nothing compared to what I had been through. It is also delusional to expect everyone to like what I do.
Also, I used to get into fights with boys in school. Yeah, really the kick, slap, punch, pull hair, pull school uniform kind. Plus colourful vulgarities and hand gestures in all languages.
I had grown more demure since, just never thought that gung-ho side will be useful as a content creator in my 40s. 😂
I made a vow in 2006 when my grandmother passed away. That I would propagate Buddhism and Chinese Metaphysics to benefit sentient beings. So that she and my grandpa would be reborn in the Pureland.
It had been 14 years.
I’m a bit slow, but the fun is just beginning.
Thank you to my 2K+ subs and all the encouraging comments you left me.
Thank you to my FB friends, who have given me this safe space to grow my wings so strong that I can whack fools who disrespect women. 😁
Stay with me, my friend. Let’s see how high we can soar together. ❤️

(English writing below)

So last Sunday, I went to a plant stall to do a CNY Live.
As per my usual practice, I would always buy something from the shop if I use its premises. I don’t take advantage of other people’s businesses.
That day, I wanted to preempt the plant stall staff but in my haste to start my Live, I plain forgot about it. So the husband went about looking for a plant to buy on my behalf.
There were about three staff - two ladies and the gentleman standing behind me in this photo.
Halfway through my Live, the male staff saw the handphone screen of the Husband’s.
“Wah! It’s Live ah?” He excitedly asked the husband. “How to see?!”
“You can see on Facebook!”
The staff whipped out his mobile phone and opened the Facebook app. Then the husband typed in my profile name and what followed next was comical.
I wasn’t aware as I was very focused on presenting to my Live audience.
After the Live ended, I looked through the list of Likes to see who engaged with my video.
And I was wondering why there were some foreign names.
Then the husband told me what transpired.
Yesterday while editing the Live for my Youtube upload this week, I realised at one point in time, the staff also waved to my camera and flashed his handphone screen of my Live. 😂
I bet he somewhat understood what I said, despite it being in Mandarin.
It was an interesting moment because few days ago, a lady PM me to inquire about my Bazi consultation fee. (It’s all listed at www.qianyu.sg/consultations btw)
She told me the information in my videos were accurate and valuable.
I thanked her for telling me because I had never seen her name appeared in my engagement list.
She told me she was shy.
This reminded me of a Bazi client who told me the same thing. That client said she had always been low profile, so she did not think to Like my posts even though she benefitted from it.
I told the client:
But what if I stopped writing and filming because I received no or little affirmation from the audience?
She didn’t answered me.
I laughed and said I would not stop because I had made an aspiration in the past. I had made it my lifetime goal to keep my words.
But to be only taking and not giving is always selfish. I am human. And humans always need to feel belonged in one way or another. Even more so when I am writing about unorthodox topics.
Giving encouragement is a form of kindness and showing appreciation, be it through post engagements or telling me now.
The good thing about direct post engagement is that it benefits others, who may need the message more than us.
Since I started weekly uploads to YouTube in June, a lot more queries come in every month. A number of them know me, due to their FB friends sharing my videos on their timeline.
Thing is, their FB friend does not have a clue that they watched my video and came to seek my service.
We don’t go around telling the whole world our problems, you see.
Sometimes, it’s easier to tell a stranger who has the solutions, than a friend who can only tell you to think about happier things.
I have been posting online for 3.5 years and have met hundreds of people. Perhaps to you, it seems that I am helping people.
But like what Buddha says, the sentient beings are here to help us actualise our spiritual practice, to attain enlightenment and Buddhahood.
It is a reciprocal cycle. The more people I see, the more I realise how transient this Samsara world is. The more I write and film, the clearer I am in my thinking and aspirations.
I don't wish to have the kind of destinies I deal with, so I am more careful in my doings and thoughts. I see first-hand how greed, ignorance and anger can kill people, so I have opened up my heart to give out more love and let go of stubborn beliefs that benefit no one.
So thank you to you, you and you for helping me to be a better person and giving me a holy purpose in this life. I have never been happier in my entire lifetime and I want to do this for as long as I live.
I hope I can do the same for you, so that you will do the same for others too.
