Sheung Luk Stream (Rock Pool) is one of the few clean freshwater river pools in Hong Kong, located just beyond the beachside village of Sai Wan.
Driving into the reserve park without a pass is prohibited hence we took a green taxi from Sai Kung to the Sai Wan Pavilion and hike to the Rock Pool from there. It’s an easy 45 minutes hike with decent views overlooking the High Island Reservoir along the way as the trail wraps through the East Country Park, the village and the beach.
At the Rock Pool, you’ll pass through three small basins before reaching it’s very deep– river pool. For those looking for a thrill like my Luv and Son, you can cliff jumping into the rock pool or chill and picnic on the surrounding rocks.
There are dinning food stalls by the beach where hot food, beverage and alcohol are available. We had pre booked a speedboat back to Sai King instead of hiking out but you can actually book it from the food stalls by the beach whenever you want to head back before 3pm as the last ride is at 3pm.
I highly recommend you to take a trip and check it out. It’s a hidden gem and it’s totally worth it to spend a day at the Rock Pool and at the beach.
PS My sons are 9 and 7 and they are avid hikers as we hike almost every weekend. Daddy is also comfortable to guide my younger boy Daniel along and be his safety net. The hike before the Rock Pool is easy but the short hike up to the Rock Pool might be a little challenging for kids younger than 6.
