I departed, overwhelmed with excessive sorrow, and I could not relax until I found myself at a tree where I lifted my head towards the sky to see a cloud shading me. I looked up and saw Gabriel in it. He called me saying: Allah has heard your people’s saying to you and how they have replied, and Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people.

The Angel of the Mountains greeted me and he said: O Muhammad, order what you wish, and if you like, I will let the mountains fall on them.”
The Prophet said, “No, rather I hope that Allah will bring from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone without associating partners with him.”

拜天公了！

天公，即是三十三天主的玉皇大帝，在佛教裡的帝釋天主。祂總櫃百神，下握七十二地、四大部洲和億萬生靈。

祂原是一位婆羅門的女子。在釋迦牟尼佛之前，有一佛名為「迦葉佛」。迦葉佛圓寂後，這婆羅門女發心，想造塔供養迦葉佛。

有三十二位女子也現前，幫助婆羅門女一起建塔。

造塔有十種殊勝果報：
1. 不生邊國（沒有佛法的地方）
2. 不受貧困
3. 不得邪見愚痴之身
4. 壽命長遠
5. 可得十六大國之王位
6. 可得金剛羅延力
7. 可得無比廣大之福德
8. 得蒙諸佛菩薩之慈悲
9. 具足三明六通八解脫
10. 得往生十方淨土

後來，她們便因造塔功德這善因而升天。婆羅門女成為三十三天主，其他三十二位女子成為三十二天裡的各天主。

最近因為武漢肺炎病毒，鬧得人心惶惶。

做人，不怕窮，最怕笨。可偏偏利益在前時，有的人的腦袋就掉到屁股上了。

（一）
如果這時候，你選擇乘火打劫，賺缺德錢，溫馨告訴你，這錢會讓你和你的後代吃不了 兜著走。因為這是犯了偷盜戒，東西明明不值那麼多錢，可是你故意抬高價格。其因果包括有錢沒命花，疾病連連，或多世的貧困低賤命，子孫後代也一樣。

瘟疫嚴重蔓延，你依然無動於衷，就有草菅人命之罪。你沒有護生，還犯了殺生戒，造了入無間地獄的因。

（二）
如果這時候，你沒查證事實，或故意作亂，散播假新聞，讓眾生有了畏懼恐慌心而失去理智，小心自己種下愚癡的因，沒有明心的智慧，將來自己也會有被人嚇的果，過著提心吊膽的日子。

（三）
還有一種人，在災難時，喜愛動口，什麼事都要挑，缺乏同理心、包容心和耐性。牙尖嘴利的人，最容易犯口業。不要小看口業，人會有口臭、不整齊的牙齒、嘴吧難看、人緣欠佳、家庭失合、事業不振，說的話沒有人相信喜聽，都是口業的果報。

其實，人間有災難時，是我們很好修功德的時候。

我們應該向天公學習，有錢出錢，有力出力，有腦用腦，眾善奉行，諸惡莫作。

無論您是如何拜天公，請記得祂當初如何發心護持佛教，利益眾生，而得此尊貴之身。

金銀財寶、佳餚美酒，天上界不缺，甚至比人間還好幾億萬倍

我們人間的這些芝麻綠豆的供品，是天公慈悲才會前來受供。

如果您真心想得到祂的護佑，好好修行，勤於佈施，護持佛教，和祂一樣有護佑天下蒼生之心，您德昭鄰壑時，祂必會庇佑著您，讓您才震四方、財源廣進、閤家安康。

怎麼了？您不知道嗎？一個人特別有本事和才華時，就是因為後面有大天神或佛菩薩罩著啊！ 有的人命之所以會平庸，因為後面「空空如也」啊！

Today is the day to pay homage to Tian Gong!

Tian Gong, also known as the Lord of the Trāyastriṃśa (thirty-three) Heavens, the Jade Emperor and in Buddhism, Śakra.

He is the lord of a hundred devas, seventy-two lands, the four dvipas and billions of living beings.

In a previous reincarnation, He was a Brahmin lady. Before Shakyamuni Buddha, there was Kassapa Buddha. When Kassapa Buddha entered parinirvana, this Brahmin lady wished to construct a stupa as a offering to Kassapa Buddha.

32 other ladies joined in her initiative.

Building stupas have 10 karmic rewards:

1. One will not be born in border lands. (where no Dharma is present)
2. One does not suffer from poverty.
3. One will not receive a body of ignorance and erroneous views.
4. One's lifespan is long.
5. One receives the throne of 16 great kingdoms.
6. One obtains the Vajra Indestructible Power.
7. One obtains immeasurably vast and grand blessedness and merits.
8. One receives the compassion of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
9. One has complete three kinds of supernormal awareness.
10. One will be reborn in the pure land.

Because of the virtuous cause from building a stupa, these thirty-three ladies ascended to the heaven. The Brahmin lady became the ruler of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, while the other 32 ladies became respective rulers of the 32 Heavens under it.

The Wuhan virus has everyone in a jittery mode recently.

As a human, one should fear being stupid rather than being poor. Yet when money is placed as a bait, the brains of some people seemed to have dropped right out of the head and straight to the bottoms.

If at this point in time, you choose to take advantage of this misfortune and make money unscrupulously, let me gently remind you: you are getting more than you bargained for.

This constitutes stealing. The goods you are selling are not worth that much money, but you deliberately raise the prices to fleece off the consumers.

The retribution for stealing will be having to spend your "hard-earned" money on prolonged/frequent sickness, and/or many lifetimes of poverty and lowliness. The same applies to your descendants.

As the epidemic spreads and worsens, should you remain callous, that means you have utter disregard to human life. You do not protect lives but choose to commit the sin of killing lives. This sows the seed for you to be banished to Infernal Hell upon your death.

If at this point in time, you spread false news without checking on facts, or out of sabotage, causing fear and panic in sentient beings, beware that you have planted the seed for ignorance and lack of enlightening wisdom.

In the future, you will have to undergo the retribution of being frightened by others, and live your days in tenterhooks.

There is another kind of people who likes to speak recklessly in times of disasters. They pick at everything and anything, lacking empathy, patience and forbearance.

It is very easy for a person with a sharp tongue and little wisdom to commit sins of the speech.

Do not underestimate the karma from that. Its karmic retributions can cause a person to suffer from a stinky breath, untidy teeth, ugly mouth, poor inter-personal relations, disharmonious family, flagging career, and/or lack of credibility and likability in his/her words.

When a disaster strikes the human realm, it is a very good time for us to cultivate our merits.

We should take a leaf out of Tian Gong's book - donate money that you have, contribute your physical effort that you can, use your brain that you...erm...have. Do no evil and cultivate all good.

(Oh, come on, if you can read this, you sure have a brain. It's just a matter of whether you have the heart to or not. )

Regardless of how you pay homage to Tian Gong, bear in mind how He generated bodhicitta to uphold Buddhism, benefit sentient beings and hence, obtained a distinguished rebirth.

There is no lacking in gold and silver treasures, delicacies and fine wines in the Heaven realm. In fact, they are a billion times better than what we have here in the human world.

The offerings we give are peanuts, but the Jade Emperor comes forth to receive our offerings out of compassion.

If you truly seek His protection, do your spiritual cultivation well, be diligent in your giving, uphold Buddhism, and have the heart to protect and help the common people, like the Jade Emperor's heart.

When your virtues are so well-known that you win the respect of your neighbours, the Jade Emperor will definitely
bless you with talents that astonish the world, plenty of wealth and a peaceful and healthy family.

Why? Didn't you know? When a person is especially talented and capable, that is because behind the person, there is a great Deva, Buddha or Bodhisattva watching over him/her.

On the other hand, when a person's destiny is very mediocre, that is because behind him/her is just empty space.

這位譯者譯了幾本我感興趣的書，幾年前揭露過他翻譯另一本書（《是邏輯還是鬼扯？》）時的一些誤譯，有些頗爲好笑。著名無神論者、倡導演化論的英國科學家道金斯這本科普好書的翻譯，看來也一樣的不用心（還是無能爲力？），這裡略舉例幾段。

// Back to those dinosaurs. How do we know that they once roamed the Earth? We have never seen them or heard them or had to run away from them. Alas, we don’t have a time machine to show them to us directly. But here we have a different kind of aid to our senses: we have fossils, and we can see them with the naked eye. Fossils don’t run and jump but, because we understand how fossils are formed, they can tell us something of what happened millions of years ago. We understand how water, with minerals dissolved in it, seeps into corpses buried in layers of mud and rock. We understand how the minerals crystallize out of the water and replace the 【materials】 of the corpse, 【atom by atom,】 leaving some trace of the original animal’s form imprinted on the stone. So, although we can’t see dinosaurs directly with our senses, we can work out that they must have existed, using indirect evidence that still ultimately reaches us through our senses: we see and touch the stony traces of ancient life.

「礦物質」取代「礦物質」？原譯把materials看成minerals。

改：這些礦物質在水分蒸發後會留下結晶，取代殘骸裡的物質。

1b. Atom by atom，從英文的寫法看，應當修飾前句的「取代」(replace)，不是修飾後句的「leave some trace」。

改：這些礦物質在水分蒸發後會留下結晶，一個原子接著一個原子取代殘骸裡的物質，把動物原本形體的些許痕跡滲印在石頭上。

這些錯誤如果看來沒什麼，好戲還在後頭！

// In a different sense, a telescope can work like a kind of time machine. What we see when we look at anything is actually light, and 【light takes time to travel.】 Even when you look at a friend’s face you are seeing them in the past, because the light from their face takes a tiny fraction of a second to travel to your eye. Sound travels much more slowly, which is why you see a firework burst in the sky noticeably earlier than you hear the bang. When you watch a man chopping down a tree in the distance, there is an odd delay in the sound of his axe hitting the tree.

2. 這個錯誤不必多解釋，很爆笑，但非提出來不可：

「光可以帶著時間旅行」，正確意思應該是「光的旅行（穿越空間）需要時間」。takes time （花時間）想像成擬人化的「攜帶時間」，真的很有趣。同一段下一兩句譯者卻又恢復神智，寫出「光從他們臉上到達我們的眼睛需要時間」。

「帶著X旅行」也是一本書名：Umberto Eco有本趣味散文集「帶著鮭魚去旅行」，張定綺譯，好像是從義大利文的英譯版再轉譯成中文。艾柯愛玩語言，那本書翻譯的挑戰很大。

// Are there really aliens in outer space? We’ve never seen or heard them. Are they a part of reality? Nobody knows; 【but we do know what kind of things could one day tell us if they are.】 If ever we got near to an alien, our sense organs 【could tell us about it.】 Perhaps somebody will one day invent a telescope powerful enough to detect life on other planets from here. Or perhaps our radio telescopes will pick up messages that could only have come from an alien intelligence. For reality doesn’t just consist of the things we already know about: it also includes things that exist but that we don’t know about yet - and won’t know about until some future time, perhaps when we have built better instruments to assist our five senses.

3. 真是鬼扯的翻譯！

// But we do know what kind of things could one day tell us if they are.
可以確定的是，如果外星人真的存在，那麼總有一天我們會知道他們的長相。//

「長相」是從英文的哪一個地方憑空妄想出來的啊？〔請想像這裡插入三萬個黑人問號！〕

But we do know 但我們確知：
what kind of things could one day tell us 什麼東西可以在未來的某一天告訴我們
if they are. 外星人是否存在
(=if they are a part of reality.外星人是否是現實的一部分)

英文完全沒有關於「長相、外貌」的痕跡！

4. 下一句也一模一樣，完全未提外星人的長相，爲何譯者那麼執念於外星人的長相？

// If ever we got near to an alien, our sense organs could tell us about it.
如果我們靠近外星人，我們的感官會讓我們知道外星人長什麼樣子。//

這裡，got near 是與現實相反的虛擬語氣，表示作者認爲我們距離認識、看到外星人還很遙遠。單單譯成「如果」也不夠力，可以說「萬一、萬一真的」。

5. 更基本的英文理解失能，是這個：it 指的是「our getting near to an alien」即條件句的內容，翻譯怎麼會瞎扯為「外星人的長相」呢？

改譯：萬一我們真的與外星人接近了，我們的感官會讓我們知道（這件事）。

// Atoms have always existed, but it was only rather recently that we became sure of their existence, and it is likely that our descendants will know about 【many more things that, for now, we do not.】 That is the wonder and the joy of science: it goes on and on uncovering new things. This doesn’t mean we should believe just anything that anybody might dream up: there are a million things we can imagine but which are highly unlikely to be real - fairies and hobgoblins, leprechauns and hippogriffs. We should always be open-minded, but 【the only good reason to believe that something exists is if there is real evidence that it does.】

原子一直都存在著，但我們知道有原子這個東西卻是相當晚近的事。很可能到了我們子孫的時代，人類【對原子的了解會比現在更深入。】 而這正是科學奇特與令人雀躍之處：科學總是能不斷揭露新的事物。但這不表示任何人夢想的任何事物我們都應該深信不疑：我們可以想像出一百萬件事物，但這些事物卻有可能極不真實，例如仙女與妖精，矮精靈與駿鷹。我們的心胸應該保持開放，【但我們必須要有真憑實據才能相信事物真的存在。 】//

6. 才一下段，又是一個基本英文句的誤解：

// it is likely that our descendants will know about many more things that, for now, we do not.
很可能到了我們子孫的時代，人類對原子的了解會比現在更深入。 //

know about many more things that, for now, we do not 指的不再是原子了，前句的原子只是舉例，告訴我們：很多存在的事物，人類會需要一段時間才知道存在。

改：很可能到了我們子孫的時代，人類才會認識許多目前不知道（已存在）的事物。

7. // the only good reason to believe that something exists is if there is real evidence that it does.
但我們必須要有真憑實據才能相信事物真的存在//

這句意思雖大致沒錯，卻失去原文的強調，「唯一」的好理由：

改：有真憑實據證明事物存在，是相信事物存在的唯一好理由。

以這種每段幾乎都有莫名其妙的誤譯的進度來看，整本書細究下來，問題恐怕是罄竹難書的「天文數字」！

Nyonya or Peranakan cuisine is a mix of influence from the Chinese and Malay cuisines. Peranakans are descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in parts of Malaysia, particularly Penang, Malacca and Singapore, inter-marrying with local Malays and combines Chinese, Malay and other influences. Some of them also settled in Indonesia. Compared to a typical Chinese steamed fish, Nyonya steamed fish is prepared with a twist of tanginess which is very refreshing. Feel free to increase the intensity of tanginess if you like so.

This dish is extremely suitable for Chinese new year, if you don't have kids in your family. Even if you have, just reduce the amount of chilli used so that this steamed fish can be child friendly too. Also, if you are serving this for special occasion, steam a whole fish rather than fish fillet.

Ingredients:
Serves 4

2 whole peeled tomatoes
3 cloves of garlic
1 shallot
20g of young ginger
4 bird's eye chilli - deseeded
5 pcs of kaffir lime leaves (can be replaced w/ 1 stalk of lemongrass - use only the white part)
1.5 tbsps of fermented bean paste (tau cheu) (https://amzn.to/358AaPU)
Juice from 3 pcs of calamansi (can be replaced w/ 3 tbsps of fresh lime juice)
1 tsp of sugar
1/2 tsp of salt
500g of red snapper fish fillet (you can use any white fish)

Steam the fish for 15 mins. If you're steaming a whole fish, also steam it for about 15 mins, depending on how thick the fish is. For bigger fish, you might like to steam it for 17 mins.
