While I have been posting artwork about anti-Asian racism related to coronavirus, I want to make it clear that I recognise that racism exists everywhere, in every skin colour, every country, every culture. I'm not here to shame any country or ethnicity. I want us to be aware of this "disease" that is racism and make the conscious decision to stop it and to speak up against it. When I was living in China, there were a lot of racial slurs by locals about non-Chinese people (I won't repeat them) and the issue definitely needs to be addressed there - I sincerely hope that it will be. Meanwhile in Malaysia, a friend sent me the below attached photo that he took outside his apartment in KL today.
I am appalled. Even if the virus started with a handful of Chinese people, even if 9-11 was caused by a handful of religious extremists, and even if the landlords of this apartment had problems with their tenants - it does not justify taking it out on the rest of the people who are just trying to live their lives.
I know we can fight this "disease". I want to believe we are all inherently loving, kind and tolerant people - who probably do not understand each other well enough yet. If we all do our part to fight racism, we will come together stronger. Let's speak up against it and make no room for it.

This one’s dedicated to doctors and nurses who are risking their own health and safety to battle the spread of the virus in hospitals, and especially those who are nervous of potentially racist behaviors in the hospitals. A big shoutout to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital for launching an anti-racism warning, condemning coronavirus-related abuse and behaviour that defies medical advice.

Let’s all make no room for racism.

This is 6 of the 10 pieces I’m making to speak out against (anti-Asian) racism during this period. I’m using materials that I can find in my house while I’m staying home during this season. This one’s made of pink Himalayan salt. #iamnotavirus

“Did you hear, a 2 year old girl got stabbed in Texas today?”, a friend told me just a few days ago.
.
The stabber confessed to attempting to murder three Asian-American family members including a 2 and 6 year old, thinking the family was Chinese and could infect people with the virus.

We must reject racism and be united against it. We must make NO room for it. It is 2020 after all. When someone says something racist, stand up and speak out against it. May our children grow up in a beautiful diverse world that is tolerant, kind and loving.

I’m making a series of 10 pieces to speak out against anti-Asian racism, made of things I can find at home. This piece is made of cake sprinkles, dedicated to the 2 year old girl in Texas. Recover soon, sweetie.

(Also, thank you friends for your thoughtful, kind comments in the last post. In means a lot to me, and I’m sure also to many who look like me.) #iamnotavirus
