While I cook for my kids, I am not an expert when it comes to traditional herbs and spices. In fact, I know way too little about them and find it hard to teach my kids when we visit spice gardens at Fort Canning, Botanic Garden or the zoo.

Thanks to this book titled A Taste of Home, which covers 17 herbs and spices commonly used in Singapore, we now understand more about plants like ginseng, rosemary, saffron, star anise, tamarind and more. This is a handy and colourful book that is published and beautifully illustrated by the talented mummy Dorothea of @dottieshop_sg. Every page includes facts about the plant, an original watercolour illustration and an outline for the kids to do their own colouring.

My kids love to read and as you might know, the big girl loves bugs and animals. So it is indeed a refreshing change to see them reading about plants as they pick up new knowledge along the way. It's even better when they explore together, hand in hand. Let's hope we will have more things to share with each other the next time we visit a spice garden!
