Here's my cousin Julian Rang and I doing solo male and female dance for our elders in Bario Asal longhouse in 2017. The male dance is the warrior dance, and the female dance imitates the hornbill. So nervous to dance for our wonderful grandaunts!! Playing sape' are my cousin Hezekiah Asim and uncle Gerawat Ulun.

How time flies! 💖 four years ago I worked with Cikgu Deyline & SMK Lutong in Miri, and a local choreographer (Wan), to train these young dancers Orang Ulu ngarang/ dance, which they eventually performed on stage in KL! Coming to do anything in KL, at that age, when you live in East Malaysia, is a big deal, and so exciting 🌸 So proud of them for coming so far, for developing confidence, for their discipline, for their togetherness that didn’t see religion or ethnicity, for putting together their own costumes and oh myyyyy how gracefully they danced. Not just knowing the steps but you could see how they felt and embodied the Hornbill bird and the warrior 🌟 I felt soooo proud of everyone. Hope you guys okay2, whereever you are 💖

This is a traditional dance of the orang ulu peoples of Sarawak (Malaysia) and Kalimantan (Indonesia), choreographed for a large group of dancers. The steps are from both the ladies' hornbill dance and the male warrior dance.

"Datun Julud" means "long dance" in Dayak Kenyah language, "Hivan Joh" in Kayan, and "Arang Kadang" in Kelabit. It is traditionally danced by a group of ladies on ceremonious occasions, by the Orang Ulu people of Borneo
