This is my guide, Mr. Yang. He grew up in Tiger Leaping Gorge, in a small town next to Haba Village and has been guiding people up Haba Snow Mountain safely for many years. I could not have made it up the mountain without Mr. Yang; failure rates of those seeking to summit range between 30-60%, due to altitude sickness, bad weather or fitness level. Towards the beginning of our ascent on summit day, once we reached the big rock slab, my pacing was too fast and he noticed that I was getting tired quickly. He told me to slow down, enjoy the experience of being on the mountain and take smaller, slower steps. Several times, on the glacier, the strong 50-60km/h gusts of wind quite literally knocked me over; Mr. Yang held my hand and hooked his arm around mine to ensure my safety. About one-third of the way up the mountain, I realised my gloves were not thick enough and I started to feel the painful onset of potential frostbite in my fingers; Mr. Yang gave me his gloves. After climbing the glacier, about two-thirds of the way up to the summit, at the base of the snow slope, he told me leave my summit pack there and pick it up on the way back down, in order to lighten my load; Mr. Yang carried my water for me to the summit. Throughout the ascent, as the winds grew stronger and the slopes steeper (it was a 60-degree gradient on the snow slope and there were no fixed lines set up yet to attach yourself to for safety), he would say to me, "Don't worry, let's just keep going and enjoy the mountain for as long as we can. If the winds become too dangerous, we will turn back. Remember, it's not about summiting the mountain, but about enjoying the experience." At the summit, in the freezing cold, he took off his gloves and quickly snapped a few pictures of me to remember, before ushering me back down the mountain before the winds got stronger. He taught me so many lessons that day that I will never forget, but most of all, it was the first time in my life that I was truly able to live in the present, let go of the outcome, and just focus on the beauty of each moment 🌟 #travel #wanderlust #yunnan #mountaineering #habasnowmountain #priscillaspicks @ Haba Snow Mountain
