船家十市乘載村民出城,他一直無親無故,載人渡河成了他生命的依歸。但河流上游正興建一座橋,不久之後,沒有人再需要他和他的船。
電影基本上只有三位主要角色,和一個場景:靠在河邊的木屋。河流是十市的生命,它在夏季時的流水特別湍急,水從山上的溶雪而來,對我們拍攝增添危險和難度。然而變化是這部電影的主題,隨季節造成的河流和地貎變化,是整齣戲的核心和要帶出的感覺。
導演小田切讓一直叫我慢慢拍,讓影像說話,他不想拍得太「花巧」。他不停跟我說「拍得像傳統風景畫一樣便好」,不斷着我往後退,讓構圖盡可能地寬闊。我常跟他說笑「如果觀眾用手提電話看這齣戲,恐怕看不到主角,他們在畫面上太微小了。」
我們在夏天開拍。第一日,劇組便有三人因為在空曠而又接近40度高温下工作而中暑,但我們也持續拍了好幾星期。之後到一月,我們再回來拍攝,當時的温度已下降至零下20度,寒風刺骨,漫天飛雪。
所有藝術都是摯誠之作,它的展現應是不多不少,恰如其分。它是自然而然生成的結果。電影最終有這效果,完全因為河流的形態:當你尊重它、從它身上學習,天氣、山脈和變幻無常的天空自然交織成作品今天的模樣。你只要忍耐,退一步欣賞。大自然為我成就了這作品一大部分。
Boatman Toichi ferries passengers across the river that separates the villagers from the town. He lives alone and this is the only life he has known. But upstream a bridge is being built, so soon no one will need him or his boat anymore.
There are basically only three characters in the film. There is basically only one set:the boatman’s hut by the river. The river is Toichi’s life. The river runs very fast in summer, watered by the mountains melting snow. So it was very dangerous and difficult to film. Since change is the main theme showing the seasons and the river and landscape at different times of day was basic to our story and the feel of the film.
Director Joe Odagiri kept telling me to slow down. To let the image talk, he didn’t want any “film tricks”. “ Make it look like a traditional landscape scroll “ he kept saying. And he would always ask me to pull back, to make the frame as wide as possible. I often joked “ people watching this on their phone would even see the characters, they are so small on the screen “.
We start in Summer. First day three of my crew had heat stroke working in this vast open space under the 40-something degrees Celsius. We worked for a few weeks like this, then came back in January, for the minus 20 °C windy winter and the snow.
All art has to be true to itself. It has to be no more or less than what it is about. It has to be what it will be. This film is the way it is because the river is the way it is: you have to respect it and learn from it. And this film looks the way it does because of the climate, the mountains, the changing sky. You have to be patient, to step back to appreciate. In this film, nature did most of my work for me.

伊瓜蘇在南美瓜拉尼語有「大水」的意思。總闊2.7公里,高82公尺的伊瓜蘇瀑布是世界三大瀑布之一。
在《春光乍洩》裡,瀑布群象徴梁朝偉的旅程終結….但往何處去?
接受愛人的離開?接受自己從來只是孑然一身?
這像我們現今面對疫情經常遇到的事。
面對不可抗力如大自然、病毒以至意外,人類如此微不足道。一切皆非我們而起,卻又無從控制。
我的工作不是要分析這幕戲,而是要拍攝它。
最初的概念是要從正上方拍攝瀑布。我們不是拍明信片照,要捕捉的是瀑布抽象的美,展現的某種活力。
當時唯一能做的,就是借直升機拍攝。可是,找來的都不是專門用來拍攝的直升機。面積很小,最多只能容納機師、我與攝影機和助手。
我們決定在直升機邊緣安裝一個架來安置攝影機,再綁上彈簧索,確保它拍攝時不會因懸吊機外而掉下去。
我坐在直升機地板上,雙腿懸吊在架外,唯一確保我安全就是腰間纏着的一條繩,它由助手牽着。
伊瓜蘇瀑布的流量是每秒1,75立方公尺,形成了巨大的拉力, 使我們要再飛高1千米才能拍攝到這瀑布,避免被大水吸進去。
我要拍一個抽象又超凡脫俗的瀑布,然而瀑布群本來又是旅遊點,周圍都是酒店、觀光船和觀景橋。
我們在上空盤旋…我不斷拍攝,但鏡頭總避不開那些酒店,因為我們還未能從瀑布正上方拍下去。
接著我想到一個方法,我向機師提議把直升機機身傾斜向瀑布中心。機師說他試著做。
他把直升機身傾側一方,我也意識自己縱身下去,上半身整個人已懸吊機外。跟死神距離不過是千米之隔,結果全繫於一條繩和一條彈簧索….. 我本有畏高…..或許瀑布群讓我有了「頓悟」…..明白到自己為何堅持拍電影,為何我們還要關心。
於是……我成就了攝影生涯一個最難忘的電影鏡頭:為《春光乍洩》揭開序幕,營造了它的調子。
Iguazu means "big water" the indigenous Guarini language. And being 2.7 kilometres wide, and dropping 82 metres on average these falls are the biggest in the world.
In "Happy Together" they represent the end of Tony’s Journey to …. to what ?
Acceptance of loss of his lover ? We are all alone in ourselves ?
This something Covid 19 is making us all face up to day to day .
How insignificant we are compared to the infinite force that is Nature,
and a virus or accidents that are not our fault and yet not under our control?
It is not my role to analyse the meaning of the scene . I was my job to film it.
The idea was to film the falls from above. Not as a picture postcard, but more like some abstraction of beauty, some kind of celebration of energy.
The only way to do that was by helicopter. The only helicopter available was not equiped for filming. And it was very small. In fact so small that it could carry only the pilot, myself and the camera and my assistant.
We plan to rig a frame around the helicopter and "secure" the camera with bungee cords so it hang suspended outside the helicopter .
I sit on the floor, but my legs have to rest on the frame OUTSIDE. The only thing holding me in is my assistant holding a rope around my waist .
The water flows at 1.756 metres per second over the falls, which creates such a down-pull that we have to fly a kilometre above the falls to avoid being sucked in to them .
The idea is to have an image that is abstract, other-worldly. Problem is that the Falls are also a tourist destination so Hotels and tour boats and bridges all press right up to their edge.
We circle above … I shoot. I can’t keep the hotels and such out of frame . We are not looking directly down enough . What to do ?
I have a bright idea : let’s tilt the helicopter on its side and just hover right over the falls I suggest . The pilot says he’ll try.
He tilts the helicopter . And then I realise I am face down half way outside this machine a kilometer away from death only held back by a rope and a bungees cord … and then in spite of my fear or heights …. Or maybe because of them I have a kind of “ epiphany “ … I realise why I am doing this, that’s we make films, why we care .
And so….we get one of the most memorable shots I have ever made : the one that opens and sets the mood for Happy Together.

This was a late night testing the Canon 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 just to see how it does for videos on my Sony A7s with a Commlite adapter. The 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 is quite affordable option if you cannot afford the Canon 70-200mm f4 L as you can find it for around 100bucks or even less second hand.

Personally I do like how it renders blurry backgrounds and does have a certain filmic look. But one thing is filming at 210mm you really need quite a distance between you and the subject, but this lens does not have any stabilisation and probably be nicer to use on the markii series of the A7 cams, as these were filmed on a monopod but still hard to hold it steady while filming at 210mm, otherwise a tripod is really required. Macro wise using on a full frame its not that extreme, but on APSC crop mode it does help more getting the image closer for a macro. Overal do like the looks of shots and do feel its more filmic then a 50mm f1.8 with it looks, but its not so great but wide shots indoors but usable for macro shots, but do need a tripod instead of a monopod to make it easier to use and lessening the shake and drift.
