Deeply saddened to learn of Maurice Baker’s passing on Tuesday, while I was away. Mr Baker spent a long, varied career in service to Singapore, as a teacher, academic, and diplomat.
In 1967, Maurice was Head of English Literature at the University of Singapore, when he agreed to become Singapore’s first High Commissioner to India, out of a sense of duty. He was later High Commissioner to Malaysia and Ambassador to the Philippines.
Maurice called himself an “accidental diplomat”, but he was a natural: affable and with a gift for getting along with people. He is best remembered for his role managing our relations with Malaysia, the country of his birth. He got along exceedingly well with four Malaysian PMs during his tenure. Diplomacy runs in his family: his son Bernard is currently our High Commissioner to New Zealand.
Singapore has lost a dedicated public servant, and will long remember Mr Baker for his distinguished service. – LHL

Weiron Tan set to challenge for Pro Mazda title in 2016
Malaysian driver Weiron Tan is set to challenge for the Pro Mazda Championship title in 2016, after signing with Team Pelfrey to embark on his second year in the series. He is aiming to build on a successful rookie year, which saw him finish fourth in the standings, scooping four race victories along the way. He also finished Vice-Champion in the Pro Mazda Winterfest, scoring two wins and three second places from five races.
Tan joined the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires in 2015 after a successful junior open-wheel career in Europe. At the age of just 17 he was selected by the Caterham F1 Team for its young driver development programme. After competing in the JK Racing Asia Series and Formula Gulf 1000 Series, Tan concentrated his efforts on the European scene and scored multiple race wins in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC and ATS Formel 3 Cup Championships. He then moved to the USA ahead of the 2015 Pro Mazda competition.
Tan has now joined forces with Team Pelfrey for his second year attack on the Pro Mazda Championship. Team Pelfrey is a Championship winning team that competes at all three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy - in the highly competitive Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 Championships. With previous experience as a team in IndyCar, Team Pelfrey is now committed to developing the stars of tomorrow. Reformed as a Pro Mazda development team in 2011, Pelfrey was immediately on the pace and won multiple races, and the end result was a team Championship and Connor De Phillippi claiming second in the drivers’ Championship. In 2012, the team went one better, securing both the drivers’ Championship with Jack Hawksworth and the team Championship.
Team Pelfrey has won races in every season it has competed in since returning to the series, and recently added another drivers’ Championship title to its resume in 2015 thanks to Santiago Urrutia’s efforts.
The 2016 Pro Mazda Championship will get underway on the Streets of St Petersburg for rounds one and two from 11-13 March. The 16 round series will take place over nine race weekends, concluding in Monterey in September. In 2015 Tan took his six victories at five venues, including outright victory at the prestigious Indy 500 support race.
Weiron Tan: “My rookie year in the US went really well and I cannot wait to get back into action in 2016. I came very close to winning WinterFest and was in the title fight for Pro Mazda throughout the season, so this year the aim is definitely to go for the Championship title and I’m in a strong position to do that with Team Pelfrey. St Pete can’t come soon enough.”
Jonny Baker, Director of Team Operations, Team Pelfrey: “We are extremely excited to welcome Weiron to Team Pelfrey for the 2016 Pro Mazda Championship Season. Weiron showed scintillating pace last season, and as a competitor he kept us on our toes throughout and always gave us a lot to think about. We are determined to battle for the Championship once again in 2016, and in order to do that, you have to be working with the best drivers. With Weiron on the team, I think we have one of the most exciting young talents on the Mazda Road to Indy."

It is very sad that he passed away.
I went through letters I received from him last night.
The first one was dated July 6th 1987. I remember that his reply came less than 10 days after I sent him asking what would be the best way to start
my career. It was impossible speed to correspond between Japan and America.
I counted over 60 letters sent in 4 years, after that, our correspondence were done through fax and phone calls eventually through emails.
His care for the fellow make up artists and the industry was filled with love and dedication.
He created greatest standard that only a few could get near and he is still the best in it.
He changed what "make up artist” mean to the world.
There were many things that only he could do as an artist and as one human being to others.
I have been fortunate to have great mentors in my life, he inspired and affected beyond anyone.
His kindness and love was more than my real family. He gave me new life. I would not exist here now without him.
He was the only few things I could be pride of myself. I considered him as God, guardian angel, father and a friend.
We both had somewhat messed up family relationship and he supported me mentally.
He was always there when my life changed for better.
He was the reason why I could start my career from 18 years old, worked with Akira Kurosawa, became teacher when the economy was horrible in Japan, Came to this country and worked for Rick Baker, connected me with
many great artists and friends.
And I wasn’t the only one who was so lucky to be included in his life. He had unconditional love to many artists.
Things I learned from him were more than make up. He guided me through every tough time in my life.
When I was doing make up, I was always thinking what Dick would think if he looked at what I had done. That was the way I judged my work for long time.
Last lesson I learn from him was after he moved to LA, we were talking about life and what was great about and what he regret about.
That helped me to push myself to change my life. And he kept teaching me as I was watching him passing away yesterday.
He changed so many people’s life for better, and made them better human being.
He showed how to live it.
He was the real great classic American.
I really miss him.

-- Kurt Thomas was so happy to be staying with the New York Knicks, he almost couldn't miss.
Thomas celebrated the passing of another uneventful trading deadline -- at least for him -- by scoring 21 points on 10-for-11 shooting to lead the New York Knicks past the Philadelphia 76ers 113-101 Thursday night.
"I haven't been moved yet, so I might end up finishing my career here," said Thomas, whose name was mentioned most frequently in pre-deadline trade speculation.
Thomas also grabbed 12 rebounds, and Tim Thomas shot 10-for-14 and scored 27 points for New York.
Philadelphia, which had only eight players in uniform -- none of them named Chris Webber -- was led by Allen Iverson's 29 points. Webber, acquired late Wednesday night from Sacramento, will make his Philadelphia debut Saturday against his old team, the Kings. He did not travel with the Sixers.
Stephon Marbury had 17 points and 12 assists, and Jamal Crawford added 16 points and nine assists for New York, which also was short-handed after trading Nazr Mohammed, Moochie Norris, Vin Baker and Jamison Brewer earlier in the day.
The Knicks outscored Philadelphia 32-22 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Tim Thomas had 14 points in the final period, going 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, while Kurt Thomas had 12 on 6-for-6 shooting.
"If we play (power forward and center), it's going to be hell on people because we're such good shooters," Tim Thomas said. "It's going to force guys that aren't used to coming out of the paint to have to come out and try and contain us."
Philadelphia, which needed to have eight players in uniform, brought journeyman Jason Lawson to New York in case an extra body was necessary. But Rodney Rogers -- acquired from New Orleans earlier in the day in a three-player trade -- flew to New York aboard Hornets owner George Shinn's private jet and arrived at the arena less than an hour before tipoff, prompting the Sixers to send Lawson home.
Rogers scored just six points in 20 minutes, and he missed a 3-pointer and a layup on Philadelphia's first two possessions of the fourth quarter as the Knicks opened the period with an 8-0 run to take an 89-79 lead.
Philadelphia closed within five before Kurt Thomas hit a pair of corner jumpers, making him 9-for-10 from the field and giving the Knicks a nine-point lead with 6:30 left. Tim Thomas added three 3-pointers over the final 4:20.
"I don't care who is on our basketball team," 76ers coach Jim O'Brien said. "Our team has to make a decision, at some point and time, that we are going to pay the price and be a good defensive basketball team.
"You defend, you win. If you don't, you lose," O'Brien said.
Kurt Thomas started at center and is expected to man that position for the remainder of the regular season.
He spoke with Isiah Thomas on the telephone after the 3 p.m. trade deadline passed, and the Knicks' president reminded him he kept his word by not dealing him away.
"I hear (trade rumors) every year," Kurt Thomas said. "Wouldn't you be interested in what I do out there?"
Game notes
Five members of the International Olympic Committee's selection delegation, who finished a four-day inspection visit to New York earlier in the day, sat front and center on celebrity row -- the best seats in the house. One of the delegates held his hands out when the Knicks' dancers were throwing T-shirts into the stands during the fourth quarter, but he didn't get the freebie. ... Despite their shortage of big men and bodies, the Knicks did not use 7-foot-2 center Bruno Sundov.

Allen Iverson outdueled Gary Payton with 34 points as the Philadelphia 76ers completed their first season sweep of the Seattle SuperSonics in nearly eight years with a 92-86 victory.
Iverson eclipsed the 30-point mark for the 11th time this season and helped the 76ers post their first win in Seattle since January 4, 1992. Philadelphia had lost seven straight on the road to the Sonics.
Iverson made 12-of-30 shots from the field and 9-of-13 from the line while grabbing six rebounds and handing out six assists.
While Iverson, the NBA's leading scorer, was the offensive spark as usual for the Sixers, coach Larry Brown pointed to the defense of Tyrone Hill, who held Vin Baker to 10 points.
"Our defense overall has been much improved over recent games," said Brown, who has 698 career wins. "Tyrone is a very underrated defender. We haven't been able to beat Seattle because we couldn't contain players like (Baker), but the two times this year we did a pretty good job on Vin."
Payton had 32 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Sonics but was ejected with nine seconds remaining after picking up his second technical foul. Until that point, he had played the entire game.
"Gary's still doing a good job when we need him, but Superman needs help every now and then from Lois Lane, so one of us has to step up and do something," said Seattle guard Brent Barry, who had 12 points.
Seattle has lost three straight for the first time this season and dropped to 7-1 in games decided by six points or less. The defeat halted the Sonics' seven-game home winning streak.
"We got to come out and want to win basketball games," Barry said. "Right now, we're not coming out with the effort we need. We need to pick it up."
Payton hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Seattle an 80-76 lead with 7:12 remaining, but Iverson scored seven straight points for Philadelphia, including a pair from the line that put the Sixers in front, 84-82, with four minutes to play.
After Payton's jumper staked Seattle to an 85-84 lead, Baker added a foul shot for a two-point edge with 1:49 left.
But Aaron McKie's jumper tied it with 1:12 left and Hill hit a pair from the line 24 seconds later to put the Sixers ahead for good.
"It's disappointing to lose this game," said Baker, who was 2-of-11 from the field. "When they set the double-team in the second half, that really make a difference. They really threw my rhythm off."
Larry Hughes scored 12 points and former University of Washington star Todd MacCulloch added 10 for the Sixers in his return to the northwest.
Philadelphia rebounded from Thursday's 99-94 loss at New Jersey and opened its four-game West Coast swing on a positive note.
"We're gonna try to get every win possible," Hill said. "If we go 3-1 on the trip, then we had a good road trip. We really bounced back here against a good team like Seattle from the start."
George Lynch grabbed 14 rebounds for Philadelphia, which shot 42 percent (34-of-81) from the field but held Seattle to a dismal 33 percent (37-of-81).
Trailing 50-47 at halftime, Seattle made only 3-of-18 shots in the third quarter. But the 76ers did not take full advantage, extending their lead by only one point in the period.
The Sixers also went more than six minutes before making their first field goal of the final period.
The Sonics turned a 70-66 deficit into an 80-76 lead before Philadelphia's Eric Snow hit 1-of-2 from the line to stop Seattle's momentum and set the stage for Iverson to take charge.
