Why are there so many people outside the Haw Par Mansion 虎豹別墅 on its open day? It is part of HongKonger’s collective memories.
The mansion was built by Aw Boon Haw 胡文虎, a Burmese-Chinese tycoon, who produce the very famous ointment - Tiger Balm oil 萬金油, in 1930s.
This Mansion is one of the three Tiger Balm Mansions in the world - another two in FuJian and Singapore respectively. The ones in Hong Kong and Singapore also has a theme park for public enjoyment and to promote Chinese values - do good things (the theme park was full of sculptures showing the different ways the King of Hell punishes people who did bad things). It was a nightmare to the kids 😅
The Tiger Balm garden in Hong Kong was where locals visit during weekends in the past. Have I been to the Tiger Balm garden before? Yes! When I was 3 years old. And then in 1998, the Aw family sold the entire Garden complex to Cheung Kong Holdings for redevelopment. To preserve this garden, the government made an agreement with Cheung Kong Holdings, but the theme park was still demolished in 2004.
The remaining 1/8th of the original garden has turned into a music centre - Haw Par Music. The other part was demolished and used to build luxury houses - the Legend at Jardine’s Lookout.
Can you still visit the Haw Par Mansion now?
Yes! It is open to public daily until 6pm. In order to have access to all rooms in the mansion, you need to book a guided tour at https://www.hawparmusic.org in advance. Check out @HarParMusic for more information.
@hongkong_greeters managed to go into the mansion yesterday 👏🏻👏🏻 thanks for all these photos!

Have you seen Devadasi* artists performing Sadir, the dance form that was the forerunner of today’s Bharatanatyam? Here is a very rare clip that has a performance by two hereditary Sadir artists, taken from the silent documentary film, “Maharanee of Baroda” available in British Pathé, the world’s leading historical multimedia resource. This film is dated to have shot between 1930-1935** in the palace grounds of the Maharaja of Baroda. These two artists are believed to have been sent there as dowry from the Tanjavur Maratha court.
The Marathas, warriors from Maharashtra, ruled over the city of Tanjavur between the 17th and 19th centuries. When Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III was ruling Baroda, he married Princess Maharani Chimnabai of Tanjore. The queen Chimnabai brought the music and art group from Tanjore to Baroda in the 19th century.
The performance has a live musical ensemble consisting of a mridangam player, a harmonium player, two nattuvanars and a tutti artist standing behind the dancers. They are doing an Alarippu that is very similar in content and form to today’s Alarippu of Bharatanatyam. Only the style of presentation looks distinct. Though the clip here shows only this, the performance is longer and goes on for another 4 minutes.
* a loose term today used to call all hereditary dancers before the revival period (1930s). A Devadasi actually means a temple dancer who has devoted her life to the diety in the temple.
**This is the date mentioned in Brish Pathé. But there are theories that it is older, shot even before, in 1926 itself.

[2 DAYS TO LEFT TO FUNDRAISE $1510!!]
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/re-lekuah-video-music#/
Every story is born of a place and of a people. To keep a story alive means to acknowledge the life of the place and people. The Kelabit people have a tradition of telling stories through song, the storyteller sitting for nights on the floor of the raised longhouse, singing an epic.
The last two generations have lived through rapid transitions: from practising headhunting, ceremonial tattooing and animal sacrifices, to embracing Christianity in the 1930s; from having zero electricity to 24-hour solar-powered energy. Parallel to this was the introduction of formal schooling, money and deforestation. The storytelling traditions could not carry speed with the vast changes.
Re Lekuah is an old song rich with figurative meanings, many of which are lost and open to speculation. Literally though, the song gives insight to the hard work that young women had to do in the village, and perhaps a desire and longing for something more. Placed in an urban, contemporary setting, life isn’t much different.
I've always said that my aim is neither fame nor fortune, but to use myself as vessel for heritage stories to tell themselves through the arts. This particular music video project aims to keep those stories living and breathing in today's world.
We have two days left to fundraise $1510. Every little bit really helps.

Parallel to this was the introduction of formal schooling, money and deforestation. Whilst the storytelling traditions could not carry speed with the vast changes, one thing remained constant for the Kelabit: hard work.
Re Lekuah is an old song rich with figurative meanings, many of which are lost and open to speculation. Literally though, the song gives insight to the hard work that young women had to do in the village, and perhaps a desire and longing for something more. Placed in an urban, contemporary setting, life isn’t much different.
Customarily, an elder would transmit the oral tradition to her children and grandchildren, but Alena’s grandmother didn’t live long enough to pass on her stories. Alena learnt this song from Tepu’ Do’o Ayu, asking her blessing to rearrange and to share the song outside the community - whatever it takes to make people listen, is the reply.
Re Lekuah, the music video, presents dualities: drawing parallels and contrasts across time (old versus young; past versus present) and space (rural versus urban).
