Japanese international Hidetoshi Nakata has surprisingly announced his
retirement from professional football at the age of just 29.

The midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, started
all three games as Japan finished bottom of Group F at the World Cup finals,
but has now opted to bring a premature end to his glittering playing career.

Nakata was twice named Asian Player of the Year as he established himself as

website.

Nakata begun his footballing life with Japanese outfit Bellmare Hiratsuka,
and embarked on a career that would bring him the Asian Player of the Year

spell with Bolton last season, and he retires having played 77 times for his
country, scoring 11 goals.

for helping to promote the country's image overseas.
