Yesterday, my eyes were opened.
During my meeting with representatives of the Indonesian diaspora, the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office in Taipei, as well as academia and the media, I realized that my understanding of Taipei Main Station’s importance was really superficial.
It is not only a transportation hub, but rather, a bustling center of culture, commerce, and social interaction bringing together people from all walks of life.
The discussion around gatherings in the main hall of Taipei Main Station remains heated. Many people have also expressed to me that they are concerned about accessibility issues and the station's image. These are all extremely valid points and it is my job to listen to this range of voices. But I keep asking myself: if we are so concerned about the image, shouldn't we dare to embrace the image of diversity and multiculturalism?
As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei is naturally also a social hub. I will strive to ensure that it remains diverse, inclusive and providing comfortable spaces for Xinzhumin to get together.
Throughout this week, I will continue to work with Mayor Ko Wen-je as well the our Foreign and Disabled Labor Office to identify an equitable solution for the South-East Asian diaspora.

During my travels, be they for business or for leisure, I have come to realize that public libraries are important landmarks of cities around the world. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the National Library of St. Mark’s in Venice, Prague’s Strahov Monastery’s Library – all of these “Houses of Knowledge” serve as a testament to the importance of information in the development of these metropoles. This inspired me to think about the role of libraries in the urban fabric of Taipei. While some of them are true gems, such as the beautiful and environmentally sustainable Beitou Branch Library, others are rather nondescript concrete blocks. I reached out to my team and requested they conduct research on potential beautification initiatives we could implement.
Marcin, our Senior Intern from National Chengchi University, encouraged me to consider a different approach. “True beauty is the beauty from within”, they say, so in our quest to make libraries more relevant we should perhaps prioritize revising library programming. This is how we decided to reach out to our partners across Taipei’s sister cities to learn more about their best practices in making library programs more diverse, more accessible, and more relevant in the digital age.
Michael Lambert, the City Librarian of the San Francisco Public Library, and his team were extremely generous with their time and shared with us in detail how they use library programs to foster multiculturalism, environmental awareness, and circular economy across the Golden City. I was very impressed to learn about the breadth and depth of their programs as well as the willingness of Mr. Lambert’s team to collaborate with other departments and institutions in the City of Francisco. I am certain that our exchange will considerably enrich the new Strategic Plan of our own public libraries here in Taipei.
Last but not least, I sincerely hope that today’s videoconference is just the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting exchange between Taipei and San Francisco Public Libraries.

Had a candid and lively dialogue at the Deloitte World Meeting yesterday, attended by 500 Deloitte senior leaders. They last came to Singapore in 2006, when Mr Lee Kuan Yew spoke to them.
We discussed global and regional trends, globalisation and protectionism, the importance of strong but constructive unions, how Singapore’s multiculturalism was key to our development, leadership renewal, and the problem of “key man risk”.
There is no constant but change in the world, and so we need continuous renewal. It’s not just having the best team, but also bringing in members from new generations to add their ideas. Singapore must do this so that we can take on long-term problems with thoughtful planning, and not kick the can down the road. This is how we deal with issues like climate change, when we have some time to plan and execute our responses. We must not make our grandchildren ashamed one day of what we didn’t do. – LHL
