Seeing Sheng-xiang & Band live is an experience that truly speaks to the heart. Having released a double concept album Village Besieged this year, the group tackles immediate environmental issues such as industrial pollution. Musically speaking, the new addition of Beiguan (a form of traditional Taiwan music) and punk elements provides a newfound sense of grief and sorrow compared to their last album I-Village. Although lyrics such as “the gods go deaf and dumb” by lyricist Chung Yung Feng, may point to a bleak outlook, it’s Sheng-xiang’s innocent voice that makes these thoughts palpable and almost hopeful. Perhaps music can be a catalyst for change? Come and experience Sheng-Xiang & Band at Freespace Happening on 11 September and see for yourself.
