We have never failed to hold a ceremony on 9 August every year to reaffirm our independence and sovereignty, whatever the circumstances. This year was no different.
The scaled down Ceremonial Parade at the Marina Bay Floating Platform this morning was very different from our usual rousing NDP. But the marching contingents, and perennial favourites of the state flag fly-past and F-15 fighter jets bomb burst salute still thrilled and moved everyone, whether present at the Floating Platform or watching at home on TV. Among those present were COVID-19 frontliners and essential workers. And across the island you would have seen and heard the Chinooks carrying the state flag and the F-15s flying overhead, in a salute to Singapore.
