Northwest's Salmon Population May Be Running Out of Time
A Washington state report put it bluntly ( ): Because of the devastating ( ) effects of climate change and deteriorating ( ) habitats ( ), several species of salmon in the Pacific Northwest are “on the brink of ( ) extinction ( ).”
Of the 14 species of salmon and steelhead trout in Washington state that have been deemed ( ) endangered ( ) and are protected under the Endangered Species Act, 10 are lagging ( ) recovery goals, and five are considered “in crisis,” according to the 2020 State of Salmon in Watersheds report.
“Time is running out,” said the report, which is produced every other year ( ) by the Washington state Recreation and Conservation Office. “The climate is changing, rivers are warming, habitat is diminishing ( ), and the natural systems that support salmon in the Pacific Northwest need help now more than ever.”
Researchers say recovery efforts — involving state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, local conservation groups and others — have helped slow the decline of some salmon populations. The report found that two species — the Hood Canal summer chum and Snake River fall chinook — were approaching ( ) their recovery goals. It also noted that no new salmon species had been added to the endangered list since 2007.
“We are at least treading water,” said Kaleen Cottingham, director of the Washington state Recreation and Conservation Office. “We have not, however, seen the kind of progress ( ) that we had hoped for.”
With the effects of climate change expected to accelerate ( ), researchers said that more must be done to prevent further population decline and the possible extinction of some species.
Salmon play a vital ( ) role in the environment, economy and culture of the Pacific Northwest. At least 138 species depend on salmon for their food in some way. Salmon support an estimated ( ) 16,000 jobs in the fishing industry, and they are a draw ( ) for tourists.
Before the 20th century, an estimated 10 million to 16 million adult salmon and steelhead trout returned annually to the Columbia River system. The current return of wild fish is 2% of that.
One of the largest factors inhibiting salmon recovery is habitat loss. A growing human population has led to development along the shoreline and the addition of bulkheads, or sea walls, that encroach ( ) on beaches where salmon generally find insects and other food. More pavement ( ) and hard surfaces have contributed to an increase in toxic stormwater runoff ( ) that pollutes Puget Sound.

#Editorial AppleDailyHK|"What sets Hong Kong apart from the mainland is in the system, as well as the value system of the people, including their views on freedom. Most mainland Chinese people seek after luxury brand items like cosmetics, clothes, and jewelry, yet they remain indifferent after spiritual luxury items like the freedom of press and freedom of speech. Hongkongers are the complete opposite. Once there was a Chinese student who praised the clear air and freedoms of the U.S. during a commencement speech, and was soon under siege by Chinese netizens for “talking down China, and “betraying the country.” When the CCP snatches away the people’s rights such as freedom of the press and freedom of speech in the mainland, it is met with little resistance, thanks to not only the authority of totalitarianism, but also the tradition of no talking back at the state. However, she who has sailed the seven seas does not think much of mere rivers. The more freedom turns into a luxury pursuit, the more determined the people are going to pursue it."

FLASHBACK: Royalty Visit Flood Victims
In a bid to boost moral support and personal aid to the Kluang and Batu Pahat flood victims, the Johor royal family visited the two districts worst hit by floods.
The royal family was greeted with smiles and enthusiastic waves from the local communities as they make their rounds to the relief centres and affected villages to get a first-hand look at the situation.
Among members of the royal household who made the visit on Thursday were Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ibrahim Ismail Sultan Iskandar, his consort Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Syah, Raja Muda of Johor Tunku Ismail Idris Tunku Ibrahim Ismail and his brother Tunku Jalil.
The royal family was greeted with warm smiles and waves from those who were stranded at their homes as their convoy of 10 four-wheel drive vehicles drove through the thigh-high waters from village to village.
Tunku Ibrahim, when approached at the Seri Medan hall in Batu Pahat, commended the government and private sector efforts in organising a relief operation to evacuate some 8,784 victims from their homes.
“Malaysia has always been among the first to offer aid to neighbouring countries during disasters. Now that Johor is in need, everyone should come forward to help.
Tunku Ibrahim said the public should always be on the alert for the unexpected.
When news broke out that Kota Tinggi was under water and roads leading to the town were closed on Wednesday night, Tunku Ibrahim was the first member of the royal family who took off in his Mercedes Unimog, an extreme offroader, to the town to check on the condition. He also delivered aid to the victims there.
Meanwhile, Raja Zarith, who is patron of the Johor Red Crescent Society, and her sons also went on their own convoy to visit the relief centres and flood-affected villages on Thursday.
“We are worried about the victims’ health. To ensure they are healthy and have not been hit by common flu or other diseases, we have distributed vitamins and supplements to them,” she said.
Tunku Ibrahim said the state must conduct studies and find solutions to end such floods in Johor.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported the flood situation in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Kelantan has generally improved with evacuees able to return to their homes.
In Pahang, although there have been an increase in the number of people evacuated yesterday, the situation is expected to improve by today.
In Johor, the worst affected state, the situation in most areas has improved with evacuees returning to their home.
In Kluang, several roads have also been opened to traffics as floodwaters subsided. The roads were Jalan Mersing-Kluang, Jalan Palembang Ba-ru-Kluang and Jalan Kluang-Kota Tinggi.
However, the water level at the main rivers in Kluang is still above the danger level.
In Segamat, the flood has subsided and all roads have been opened to traffic.

Allen Iverson felt no satisfaction from knocking off the top team in the league, just added pressure.
Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points, Iverson added 28 and the Denver Nuggets spoiled the return of Kevin Garnett, holding on for a 124-118 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.
"Winning this game puts a lot of pressure on us, because if you can beat a team like this, then you can beat all the other teams," Iverson said. "We have enough talent to scare some people, but we just have to bring it night in and night out."
The Nuggets even beat the Celtics at full strength -- kind of. Garnett, who's been out since Jan. 25 with a strained abdominal muscle, wasn't his flashy self, finishing with four points on 2-of-7 shooting in close to 21 minutes of action. He also had eight rebounds.
"It was good to get back," said Garnett, who planned to play Wednesday night at Golden State. "It felt good."
His coach didn't mince words when asked about his star's performance.
"Not very good," said Rivers, whose team was 16-0 against the Western Conference before the loss. "But you have to expect that when he sits out that long. He was rusty."
Garnett would agree with the assessment. He felt a little winded, but chalked it up to the Mile High City.
"It feels like I've been out for a couple of years," he said. "There wasn't a lot of air out there."
His legs, though, felt rejuvenated. The nine-game break did him wonders.
"I felt like I was 27," Garnett said. "I felt young."
Garnett came in averaging 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds this season, and anchoring a Celtics defense that's allowing an NBA-low 89.4 points per game.
However, the Nuggets dictated the pace of play, scoring the most points against the Celtics this season. The previous high was 114 points scored by Toronto and Cleveland.
"We didn't want to get into an offensive shootout," Rivers said. "We did that and still had a chance to win."
Paul Pierce scored 24 points and Rajon Rondo added 22. Ray Allen, fresh off his 28-point performance at Sunday's All-Star Game, scored 14 of his 20 points in the first quarter. He went 2-for-10 after the opening 12 minutes.
But Allen almost helped bring the Celtics back. He cut the lead to 121-118 on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining when Anthony jumped up to grab his shot that was short of the rim. However, Anthony was called for goaltending. And although the Nuggets held on, Nuggets coach George Karl was upset about the call.
"Wow," Karl said. "He [referee Bennie Adams] likes making big calls and bad calls at the end of the game. How can you call goaltending when the ball is halfway below the rim?"
Anthony didn't understand the call, either.
"I could have stood right under the basket and not even jump and it would have fell right into my hands," Anthony said.
The Nuggets can't complain too much about the officiating -- they were sent to the line a season-high 49 times, hitting 34 of them. The Celtics were 19 of 28 from the free throw line.
"We got a good whistle," Karl said.
Now, he's hoping that with this win comes a little more respect.
"I think the team deserves better acceptance for what it's done," Karl said.
Not that Iverson is putting much stock in one game.
"I don't look at it as we beat the best team in the league, a win is a win," Iverson said. "Obviously, we can compete with anybody. No one seems to know how much talent we have."
Game notes
The Suns and Nuggets will play an outdoor game in Indian Wells, Calif., during the 2008-09 preseason. Camby said he may have to work on his jumper to make it more aerodynamic. "I have a high release -- it's probably not too good outdoors," he said. ... Celtics F Brian Scalabrine was out with a strained right groin. ... Denver is 22-6 at the Pepsi Center this season. ... Boston F Leon Powe had 13 points and tied a season high with 11 rebounds. ... The Nuggets had 19,894 fans in attendance, the largest regular season crowd in franchise history.
