Thanks for all the exoplanets, Kepler! Our mission will add to the catalog of 2,600 confirmed planets the Kepler and K2 missions have found so far using nine years of data. Kepler used transits — regular dips in stars' brightness — to find orbiting planets, and TESS will use the same method. TESS will carry the planet-hunting torch by searching 85 percent of the sky for transits around the nearest and brightest stars, opening the door for follow up observations of planets in our stellar neighborhood.
